As New York saw the end of 2006 for yet another year, I try to visualize Times Square in years past. What an amazing site to see and be a part of as the US grew and saw the good and bad times. I can only dream that someone out there has footage and can compile a series on Times Square from the 40's to the present.
Though I am enamored with the event I am afraid it has become something like the rest of Broadway. The event has gone commercial (this is like grass when it goes to seed). Just like Broadway allowing in Disney, Times Square is now part of the huge tourist trade. Granted, both places were before but they were owned by the city. I feel that the city does not own these any longer. A Broadway example: Blue Man Group (tubes) Born from off Broadway staging and developed into something pop and wonderful. You could only know the show if you had knowledge of its existance in the city. This is something born and raised here and is part of the city. vs. Lion Kink, Tarzan, etc.... These are freaking animations with developed scripts. Our culture is unfortunately sinking into a quagmire of lowly muck when it's ok to bring this the commericalized animacrap reworked for stage to sell tickets garbage to the sacred and holly ground of our theater district where it will stand side by side new genius and developing works. Keep the Disney's where they belong, in their own world. For that matter, why the hell don't they build a Broadway at Disney World! The Grinch is another example. My family dragged me and I must say it was exactly what I expected. On this note I will say this, I don't live in New York to see the Grinch. Enough said. Getting back to Times Square In basic terms, there are few friends I have in New York that want to go to Times Square at New Years any more. It's not that they got old, it's that the event has changed and attracted too many tourists. Tourists are ok and they keep the city moving but the over commercialization of the event has lead to something that will ultimately become a problem to control in future years. Simply stated, living in the city you learn how to act around people and treat them. We're all stacked on top of each other and there are rules. Times Square is filled with people that don't know the rules and being drunk and high does help. To add to the problem police patrol and coral the participants making one feel that the TV lies and the mayhem has controls. Next time do this Next time go to the night run in the part. They had bands and fireworks, it was wonderful and people had fun.
