FDNY: Inferno Rips Through NYC Building; 10 People Hurt
Ten people were injured after a multi-alarm fire broke out inside six-story apartment building in New York City Friday night, according to the FDNY.
Firefighters received a call around 8:15 p.m. about a fire happening inside the apartment building located on Grand Concourse in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx.
The FDNY says the fire started on the sixth floor and quickly spread to the roof of the building.
FDNY’s Chief of Emergency Medical Services Lilian Bonsignore later confirmed that ten people were injured. One civilian was hurt and taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where he is listed in serious but stable condition, according to FDNY. Additionally, nine firefighters were hurt in the fire, all with non-life-threatening injuries.
As of 10:19 p.m. the blaze was reported to be a 5-alarm fire, according to the FDNY.
At 11:47 p.m., FDNY tweeted that firefighters had the fire under control.
Firefighters are still working to target hot spots and completely extinguish the fire, said FDNY Chief of Operations Thomas Richardson.
Video from the scene shows flames shooting from a section of the roof of the apartment building.
A number of residents tell News 4 that they smelled smoke — allowing them to escape to safety.
