The new Lucia di Lammermoor blew my mind. I wouldn’t say in a good way. I think I actually had a nightmare about it the same evening.
Consider that this opera’s intent is to scare and freak you out. In the past, before the multimedia spectacle of this modern performance, this opera required the viewer to imagine the mind of Lucia as she went psycho. Today, the graphic and visual emersion scares the shit out of the viewer, taking you directly into her mind! The whole experience is intense. I believe this is intended to bring in new blood to opera, and I believe it will work. As a young at heart and open-minded opera consumer, I see some value here. The older purists are going to HATE it.
It reminded of A Clock Work Orange if you ever saw it. This would be a great substitute for a horror film for those that want that rush.
