Russell Tovey, Gemma Whelan Cast in Queers at The Old Vic
The monologues mark 50 years since Britain’s Sexual Offenses Act of 1967, which began the decriminalization process of homosexual men.
Performances begin July 28 for Queers, an eight-monologue work curated by Mark Gatiss that commemorates 50 years since the U.K. parliament’s introduction of the Sexual Offenses Act of 1967, which began to decriminalize homosexual acts in private between two men.
Presented July 28 and 31 at London’s Old Vic, the cast features Mark Bonnar, Sara Crowe, Jack Derges, Ian Gelder, Kadiff Kirwan, Russell Tovey, Gemma Whelan, and Fionn Whitehead.
They will perform works by Matthew Baldwin, Jon Bradfield, Jackie Clune, Michael Dennis, Brian Fillis, Mark Gatiss, Keith Jarrett, and Gareth McLean.
Queers, according to the Old Vic, “celebrates the most poignant, funny, tragic and riotous moments of British gay male history over the last century.” The monologues will be directed by Gatiss, along with Old Vic Associate Director Max Webster and Baylis Director Joe Murphy.
The monologues were also filmed earlier this year in a partnership between The Old Vic, BBC Studios, and Pacific Quay Productions. They will air on BBC Four this summer. Many members of the Old Vic cast are featured in the films.
