You have likely heard about the high profile victors in yesterday’s New York State Primary Election.

Governor Andrew Cuomo easily defeated challenger Cynthia Nixon, Tish James won the race for Attorney General on the Democratic side and incumbent Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul barely squeezed out a win against Jumaane Williams. Meanwhile, six members of the Independent Democratic Conference, state senators who collaborated with Republicans, went down to defeat.

But what about our Lower East Side hyperlocal races?

Local activists poured a lot of energy into the contest for a civil court judgeship in District 2. According to unofficial results from the city’s Board of Elections, Wendy Li was victorious over Robert Rosenthal 51.9% to 47.7%. There were more than 20,000 votes cast in that race.

In the 65th Assembly District, Christopher Marte won a state Democratic Committee seat. He beat Joseph Garba 64.5% to 34.8%. Marte has, of course, become a familiar name in the past couple of years, having narrowly lost a primary election against City Council member Margaret Chin last year.

Local members of the State Legislature didn’t have much to worry about last night. Assembly member Yuh-Line Niou (65th AD) did not have a challenger. Assembly member Harvey Epstein (74th AD) was victorious with 62% of the vote.
