Police Investigate After Swastikas Scrawled Inside Hillman Houses
Police are investigating an act of anti-Semitism on the Lower East Side after several swastikas were found scribbled inside the Hillman Houses on Grand Street.
The graffiti was discovered on several floors of the cooperative complex Monday, Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was first spotted at about 8:30 a.m. by a custodian. In addition to the swastikas, there was also offensive language targeting Jews.
Channel 4 spoke with one resident, Brandi Goldstein, who came across the graffiti in the stairwell near her apartment. “I walk up the stairs and I see a terrible word and then — Jews, and then it says — you and then it says — Jews again,” Goldstein said. “And then just Jews and some tag I cannot understand.” A poorly drawn swastika was also scribbled outside her front door.
In a Twitter message, the 7th Precinct stated, “We would like to let our Jewish Community know that Anti Semitic acts would not be tolerated in our Community. This incident will be thoroughly investigated.”
