Couple hope to transform Bushwick’s Secret Project Robot into an indie Bar with an Arcade

Indie game maker Mark Kleback and his fiance Stephanie Gross are hoping to purchase Secret Project Robot and open an arcade bar dedicated to Brooklyn’s underground gaming scene. The pair started a Kickstarter to help fund the project, which they’ll call Wonderville. Brooklyn Paper has more

A pair of local video-game fanatics plan to purchase artsy Bushwick watering hole Secret Project Robot, and are soliciting donations for their bid to retrofit the space into a beer-slinging arcade showcasing the borough’s underground video-game scene.

“The indie-music scene has all these bands who are making their own way, doing their own thing, and it’s very similar to the indie-gaming scene,” said would-be bar owner Mark Kleback. “It’s these kids making weird video games, who aren’t getting paid a lot, who are doing it because they’re passionate about it.”

Kleback is a commercial artist who spends his spare time crafting custom arcade cabinets for indie games often developed in and around Kings County, including physics-based space brawler Particle Mace, multi-player battle arena Crystal Brawl, and Slam City Oracles, a game about slamming into stuff, which he showcases at artsy pop-up events across the city.

From their Kickstarter, which has $46,996 pledged of a $70,000 goal.

Wonderville will be a brand new arcade, event space and bar in Brooklyn specializing in independent video games, created by a growing and vibrant community of game developers in New York City and beyond.

We’re not talking about retro arcade games from the 80s and 90s or just arcade versions of mobile games; these games are brand new, unique and ridiculously original experiences created by designers and artists today. Ever played games using only LED strips? Or door stops? Or juicers? At Wonderville you will!

Up to this point, these games have only shown up at festivals and short-term pop-ups as physical installations meant to be played by a group of people in a public space, and then they disappear. But no more! Wonderville will house independent games as a permanent home for these modern treasures. The space will also host tournaments, playtest nights, board games, comedy, live music and rotating art installations and exhibits
