Driver Wanted in Bizarre NYC House Smash

The driver of a vehicle crashed into a multi-level home on Staten Island early Monday, ran away from the scene while his passenger slid over, got behind the wheel, backed the car out of the home and crashed into a parked car around the corner, police say.

The chain-reaction of events unfolded just after 2 a.m. when the driver of the red pickup truck careened into a home on Jewett Avenue in Port Richmond, causing damage to the home’s front door and window area, according to the NYPD.

Shortly after the crash, the driver ran off, leaving his passenger inside the wrecked truck, police said. The passenger then got behind the wheel of the truck, put it in reverse and fled the crash site.

The passenger-turned-driver then made it around the corner where he crashed into a parked car, officials said. He stayed at the scene and police took him into custody a short time later. Charges are pending against the man.

The original driver is still on the run, authorities said. An investigation is ongoing.

News 4 has reached out the Department of Buildings for comment.

The accident left as many as 19 people who live in the multi-level house displaced. The Red Cross volunteers arrived at the scene to provide assistance to the displaced.
