High Wind Warning Issued as Heavy Rain Slams Tri-State

Heavy rain moving through the tri-state will taper off by midday Sunday, making way for high winds tonight and Monday, Storm Team 4 says.  

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for the entire tri-state starting Sunday night and continuing through Monday, according to Storm Team 4.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph could “cause flying debris, turn unsecured objects into projectiles and cause power outages,” according to the warning. 

Wet weather moved into the area Saturday evening, and is expected to turn to spotty showers by around noon. 

Sunday afternoon will be mild and mostly dry, but temperatures will drop Sunday evening, according to Storm Team 4.

Monday’s temperatures will be colder, with gusts keeping wind chills in the teens and 20s, Storm Team 4’s Raphael Miranda says. 

The last high wind warning for New York City was issued on March 2 of last year, when the city experienced wind gusts of 67 mph at John F. Kennedy Airport. 

The highest winds that day were on Long Island, where 78 mph gusts were recorded in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
