1. NYC Turns to Frozen Tundra as Arctic Blast Seizes Region

An arctic blast gripped the tri-state, sending wind chills plummeting well below zero, closing dozens of schools, fouling the commute and leaving winter-weary locals dreaming of the massive warmup to come next week.

The air was so cold that the National Weather Service warned of frostbite with as little as 30 minutes of exposure.

Wind chill warnings and advisories cover virtually the entire region through mid-morning, and even by afternoon single-digit feels-like temperatures will be the norm.

2. Man Caught on Video Faking Fall on Ice for Insurance Claim

A New Jersey man who claimed he hurt himself slipping on ice cubes actually threw the cubes onto the floor and lay down on top of them to make it look like he’d fallen, surveillance video shows.

Alexander Goldinsky, 57, of Randolph, filed an insurance claim between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1 of last year alleging he’d injured himself after slipping and falling in the cafeteria at a business in Woodbridge, Middlesex County prosecutors said.

Goldinsky is an independent contractor who was performing work at the business when the incident took place, prosecutors said.

3. April the Giraffe Predicts the Winner of Super Bowl LIII

A beloved upstate New York giraffe who went viral when she gave birth to her fourth calf has predicted the winner of this year’s Super Bowl.

April the Giraffe, who lives at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, picked the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3.

It’s the second year in a row that April has picked the team, which will be playing the Los Angeles Rams at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
