Next Wintry Mess Hits Weds, Then More Crazy Temp Swings

Tri-state residents are bracing for yet another wintry mix of snow and rain expected to hit the region Wednesday afternoon through the overnight hours, potentially making the Thursday morning commute a bit slick for some.

Clouds are expected to build in late after a sunny day Tuesday, paving the way for the next storm system, Storm Team 4 says. The first part of Wednesday should stay dry; precipitation associated with this system is expected to begin as snow in the afternoon, then quickly change to rain as temps rise above freezing.

Rain should continue Wednesday overnight into Thursday, potentially making for slippery roads Thursday morning, Storm Team 4 says. Most places will begin to dry out early though as temperatures soar into the 50s. By the time the system moves out, New York City should see 1 to 2 inches of snow, with a similar amount expected for western and central New Jersey, Storm Team 4 says.

Hunterdon and Warren counties could see up to 5 inches, while the coast should see an inch or less and spots north and west of the city could see up to 3 inches. A winter storm watch has been issued for about a half-dozen counties in New Jersey. See the latest weather alerts active for your neighborhood here.

The pattern follows other storms this season of snow changing over to rain; the temperatures just haven’t gotten cold enough to favor a big snowstorm track, Storm Team 4 says.

Meanwhile, a high of 37 degrees is expected Thursday, followed by a high of 34 degrees Wednesday ahead of the next warmup. At this point, it looks like Thursday will be the only day in the 50s before a drop back into the 40s.
