NYC Teacher Sexually Abused Girl in School for Months: Cops
A New York City public school teacher was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl for months, groping her buttocks, genitals and chest within the school building, the NYPD said.
Daniel Santiago, who teaches at IS 763 in Brooklyn, was arrested and charged with first-degree sex abuse and acting in a manner to injure a child under the age of 17 on Monday, police said.
The 29-year-old allegedly touched the girl’s buttocks, genitals and chest, police said. Police said the girl was a former student.
The alleged abuse took place at the school and on a school bus during a school trip between February and April of this year, according to police and prosecutors.
Prosecutors say Santiago also exchanged pictures and text messages with the girl. A family member found messages on the girl’s phone, according to prosecutors.
Santiago pleaded not guilty to the charges in court on Tuesday. His attorney Michael Postiglione on Tuesday said Santiago was “upset,” but declined to comment further.
In a statement, a city Department of Education spokesperson said Santiago “was immediately reassigned away from the classroom when we were made aware of this disturbing allegation.”
“We’ll seek to remove him from payroll as quickly as possible while this investigation is pending,” the spokesperson said.
