Woman Falls Down Stairs Fighting Off Attempted Rapist: NYPD

A woman fell down a flight of stairs as she fought off a man who followed her into her building and tried to rape her, the NYPD said.

The man followed the 40-year-old woman into her building near Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side around 6 a.m. on Saturday and grabbed her from behind as she walked up the stairs, police said.

The man tried to sexually assault the woman, but she fought him off. At some point during the attack, both the woman and the man fell down the stairs, according to police.

The man fled the scene after the attack, and the woman was taken to Harlem Hospital with injuries to her back and hand, the NYPD said.

Police are now searching for the approximately 30-year-old man, who was last seen wearing a striped red, white and black jacket with a hood, a grey hooded sweatshirt, grey sweatpants and white sneakers.

The man may have a scratch on his face, police say.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
